Hendon Residency

The tide may be turning for a Wearside beach beset by tragedy.

Locals are urged to revisit their memories and rethink the area through art.  Hearing the notes of an accordion drift across the clifftops, hunting for toys and scrap, Victorian mansion houses and green sludge – the memories residents have of Hendon beach are nothing if not varied.

The industrial beach has a chequered past, but a project led and funded by Back On The Map, the £54million programme to improve Hendon and the
East End of Sunderland, is hoping to mark a fresh start for the area.

Three artists – photographer Andy Martin, digital artist Lindsay Duncanson and lead artist / designer Dan Civico – have come together to explore “Hidden Hendon” with the help of the local community.

Dan is consulting with Back on the Map with regards the beach development as well as designing new seating and working on plans for a sea-view point for the clifftops.
